What is Sfumato?
There are three primary types of edges in oil paintings:
- Hard Edges
- Soft Edges
- Diffused Edges, also called sfumato.
Hard edges indicate an abrupt or sharp transition from one color shape to another.
Soft edges indicate a gradual or smooth transition.
Lost edges, also known as diffused edges, or Sfumato. Sfumato (sounds like sfu ma ta) means “dark smoke” in Italian. Leonardo da Vinci described it as “without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus of plane”. In other words, the edges are so soft you cannot actually see them but you know an edge is there based on other comparative elements.
The presence of all three edges are important to create realistic imagery and control the viewer's eye.
